Do I Need Witnesses for My Notary Appointment?

A document witness and a notary can have different jobs. Knowing what your document requires before the appointment can save a second trip.

Ask the document preparer first

Some documents call for witnesses in addition to notarization. Others have signing alternatives. Requirements can depend on the document, the governing law, and the recipient’s instructions. Ask the attorney, document preparer, or receiving organization how many witnesses are needed, who is qualified, and whether they must attend the same signing.

The notary is not an automatic substitute

A notarial certificate does not automatically replace document-witness requirements. Do not assume that a notary can fill every role or that notarizing a signature makes the document legally sufficient. I cannot select legal documents or determine their legal effect for you. Bring the instructions provided for your document so we can plan the requested service.

Arrange attendance before booking

Tell me whether the document requires witnesses and whether you will provide them. If you need help arranging witness service, ask ahead of time; availability and any fee must be confirmed. Make sure required signers and witnesses can attend at the agreed location and time, with any identification the appointment requires.

Prepare for a calm visit

Have the complete document ready and tell me if it is already signed. Check facility access and visitor limits for hospital or care-facility appointments. Avoid sharing sensitive identification or document images through the general website form. NightBloom provides mobile appointments throughout Whatcom County, subject to availability. Call or text (360) 685-7155 to arrange the notary portion of your appointment.
